About the Artist
Wild North is the work of printmaker and illustrator Laura Wigham, inspired by the ancient, rural landscapes of Northumberland and County Durham, the Lakes and the Borders.
Imagined while wandering these places with an old film camera and sketchbook, and crafted by hand in her Newcastle studio, Laura’s printed and collaged artwork and paper goods celebrate the folklore, nature, and quiet magic of the North.
With a joyful and whimsical style, Laura vibrantly keeps the stories of stone circles, wild seas and untouched woodland alive. Wild North encourages slow living, reconnecting with the landscape and celebrating all things wild and northern.
The process begins with collages and drawings, evolving into linocut and woodcut prints. Each print has its own character, with Laura often hand-painting onto the block, layering lines and rich colours, until the print holds a vibrant story.
Offcuts and misprints become original collages, often leading to the design of the next print - a fully circular process. The original collages are scanned and developed into products such as greetings cards and gift wrap, where the more relaxed forms and lines feel fitting.
