Teesside based painter exploring coastal landscapes through light, colour, shape, dominant line and the physicality of paint.
About the Artist
Stephen Stott is a Teesside based painter whose work responds to the coastal landscape, exploring the effects of light, colour, shape and line.
Stephen graduated from Teesside University, formerly Cleveland College of Art and Design, where he achieved a First Class BA (Hons) degree.
His practice is rooted in the study of coastal places, with a particular focus on the way light transforms the landscape. Overwhelming colour, encapsulating shape and dominant line all become starting points for his paintings.
Stephen records locations through photography, using the camera as a point of reference. However, once back in the studio, he does not directly work from the photograph. Instead, he develops his research through sketches before allowing the painting itself to lead the process.
This approach gives the work space to move beyond literal representation. Through oil on canvas or wood, Stephen explores the physicality of paint on the chosen surface, creating fresh responses to perception, memory and sense of place.
Working from his studio, Stephen expands his initial ideas into paintings that balance observation with freedom, translating coastal experience into bold, atmospheric and painterly compositions.
Stephen has exhibited at numerous art fairs and continues to show his work in galleries across the UK. His paintings are collected nationally and internationally.
